Adventurers who prefer to share camping with their pets can now do so in more places in Oregon. More state park cabins and yurts will be made pet-friendly, according to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The department is already accepting reservations starting in January 2012.

In 2012 pet owners can reserve banks lake cabins and yurts at 21 state parks, 10 percent of the system. Currently, only three percent of the system allows cats and dogs. There are some limitations; a $10 fee is applied per pet and you can have no more than two pets (cats and dogs only). Can’t get a reservation? You can still camp the traditional way with Eureka tents, a portable stove, and sturdy sleeping bags.

There’s nothing that reminds me of summer more than that distinctive campfire smell. Every summer, my family and I would travel to the Oregon coast where we would pitch a tent and start unloading our camping chairs and camping grills. Everyone would sit around the warm fire while we cooked hamburgers and hotdogs over the fire. I’d had barbequed food from the backyard, but it always tasted so much better coming straight from the fire pit. They were just store bought, generic hotdogs, but I swear I’d never tasted anything so great in all my life.

As I grew up, I started to try and get out of these Washington camping trips. After all, I was a teenager. Who wants to be seen with their parents when they’re a teenager? But secretly I really missed those summer cookouts, and I made sure when I had children of my own to reinstate the tradition. Now that my children are starting to grow older, I hear them grumbling about having to spend time with the family in a boring tent. I don’t get mad. I only smile, because I remember saying the exact same thing when I was their age!

Camping in Washington has, by far, the most beautiful scenery around. Washington RV camping is a great experience for anyone to have. It gives the freedom just to pick up and go. All your supplies are already packed in your RV. You can just get up and go.

When we are blessed with the sun in the summer, Washingtonians love to go out in the water. Our main festival that we look forward to every year is Seafair. It’s the Northwest’s largest festival in Washington.

Niagara Falls has nothing on Dry Falls. The three and a half mile long precipice known as Dry Falls is ten times the size of Niagara. In fact, Dry Falls is thought to be the greatest waterfall that has ever existed. At the end of the last ice age, flooding on a tremendous scale rushed water at 65 miles per hour through the Upper Grand Coulee and over the 400-fot Dry Falls.

The flood covered parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho in hundreds of feet of water in a matter of days. Eventually, the ice sheets that blocked the Columbia River, creating the flood, melted and the river returned to its normal size and course. The Grand Coulee and Dry Falls have been left as geological evidence of the tremendous flood. Visitors to Eastern Washington resort areas often make the trip to witness fantastic views of the Dry Falls at Sun Lakes State Park. Admission is free.

If you’re looking for a scenic kayaking trip that’s not too difficult to navigate, then you’ll want to check out the Old Devils Lake Trip on Banks Lake. During this Eastern Washington kayaking adventure you’ll witness all the beauty of a high-desert lake. You’ll want to paddle near Steamboat Rock, a peninsula that juts out into the lake. The basaltic cliffs are gorgeous to behold. When the journey is complete, be sure to check out the visitor center at Dry Falls or Lenore Caves.

Summer for many means hitting the shore. While most people think of the ocean, I prefer to head to the lake, Banks Lake, to be precise. The lake accommodates all sorts of water activities that are family friendly.

By far the best Eastern Washington boating site, Banks Lake accommodates party barges, fishing boats, jet skis and more. My kids love knee-boarding and wake-boarding day in and day out. Those who prefer to stay closer to shore can enjoy swimming or fishing from the lake shore. Even those who want to stay dry can appreciate the beauty of the lake from the many hiking and bike trails that ring the perimeter.
